Women's Water Polo Hosts LA Valley Wednesday at Paul Nelson Aquatic Center
The women's water polo team will play its home opener Wednesday, September 23, against L.A. Valley at the Paul Nelson Aquatic Center. The Bulldogs are off to a 2-5 start after playing at invitationals hosted by Cuesta and Riverside City.
This week's home contest begins at 3 p.m. and is one of just three home matches on the 2016 schedule. L.A. Valley enters the match with a perfect 5-0 record. The Monarchs have outscored their opponents 59-21 this season.
Following the home game, Hancock will play four games over two days at the Bookman Memorial Tournament hosted by Cabrillo College. Friday, Sept. 23, the Bulldogs will face Diablo Valley College at 1 p.m. before taking on Central Coast rival Cuesta College at 3:20 p.m. The following day, Hancock will face Modesto at 1 p.m. and host Cabrillo at 3:20 p.m. Diablo Valley finished third in the 2015 State Championships.
Sophomore Rebecca Gonzalez (Nipomo HS), an All-Conference player last season, leads the team with 14 goals and six assists. Freshman Shannon Copeland (Clerendon HS) has 12 goals, while freshman Ellyn Clardy (Righetti HS) has scored 11 times. Sophomore goalie Kinsley Edman (Cabrillo HS) has 20 saves in the cage for Hancock.
Last weekend, Hancock went 1-3 at an invitational hosted by Riverside City College. The Bulldogs opened with an 11-5 win over Chaffey. Gonzalez led the Bulldogs with four goals and Meagan Coyne (Righetti HS) added three. Clardy scored four times and Edman had five saves in a 16-9 loss to Long Beach. Hancock later fell 12-4 to Cerritos and 10-5 to Citrus the following day. Copeland paced Hancock with three goals against Cerritos.
