SOFTBALL DROPS SEASON OPENING DOUBLEHEADER TO TAFT
SANTA MARIA-- Visiting Taft College spoiled the debut of first-year Allan Hancock College softball coach Angeli Guerrero, sweeping a double-header, 8-0 and 5-2, at the campus field Thursday.
Hancock (0-2) played well on defense after a couple miscues early, but had trouble offensively.
In game one, Angela Martinez (0-1) went the seven-inning distance and took the loss for the Bulldogs, allowing two runs in the first, one in each the second and sixth and four in the seventh. Taft pounded out 11 hits and its winning pitcher, Alexis San Nicholas, scattered four. Hancock never threatened, but had doubles from both Martinez and catcher Vanessa Acevado.
Martinez (0-2) started game two as well and allowed nine hits and four runs in the first three innnings. Julie Ortiz (Santa Maria HS) came in to pitch to start the fourth inning, allowing one run on four hits in four innings.
The scoring for AHC came in the sixth inning when Centerfielder Gina Goold (Righetti HS) connected for a two run homerun over the leftfield fence off of Taft relief pitcher Heather Davis. The Bulldog defense played well in game two, turning two double-plays.
Hancock is on the road Feb. 12 & 13 in a tournament at College of Sequoias, with single games Feb. 15 at L.A. Valley and Canyons on Feb. 17. They will return home on Tuesday, Feb. 22 when they host Glendale at 2:30 p.m.
