HIGHLY RANKED L.A. MISSION SHOWS MEN'S SOCCER TEAM WHY
SANTA MARIA - Highly ranked L.A. Mission College displayed superior strength and quickness Friday at the AHC campus field, posting a 9-0 conference win over the Bulldog men痴 soccer team.
Hancock (3-6-2, 1-1-1 WSC) managed to stay with the undefeated Eagles through most of the first half. But a high lob from over 30-yards away over out-rushing Bulldog goalkeeper Francisco Ortiz in the final 30 seconds of the period gave Mission a 2-0 lead at the break and set the stage for a devastating second half.
AHC had golden opportunities to score on two occasions in the first period, and with any luck, may have been tied 1-1 at the break. Jose Villalba had an unchallenged 15-yard shot in the 13th minute that was saved by the Eagle keeper and Alexis Lomeli headed a centering pass just over the goal bar in the 30th minute.
Mission, which improved its undefeated record to 9-0-2, made its first goal of the match in the seventh minute. The second-ranked (state Southern Region) Eagles blew it open in the second half with a seven-goal scoring barrage. They scored in the 50th, 59th, 60th, 64th, 80th, 82nd and 84th minutes in the lopsided win. Both coaches substituted freely over the final 20 minutes.
Coach Al Garcia痴 Bulldogs will look to rebound on Tuesday (Oct. 3) in a key WSC match at Oxnard, slated for a 4 p.m. start.
