Hancock tastes defeat for first time in 2000
Defeat finally came to Hancock College's men's soccer team Saturday on the first day of play in the Hancock Summer Classic on campus.
Facing a tough Compton side, the Bulldogs were beaten 4-2 after allowing four consecutive goals to end the first half and begin the second.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the 13th minute when John Roth scored on Nathan Nunez's throw-in. But the Tartars answered in the 23rd minute and took the lead for good with a goal just before halftime, countering Hancock's attack and beating the defense back.
Compton extended its lead to 4-1 before Roth scored his second goal on an assist from Billy Barbaree in the 89th minute.
The Bulldogs came back from the defeat with a 4-1 victory over Cabrillo in their next game. Isaac Torres scored two more times to give him 11 goals in just seven games. Homero Vasquez added a goal on an assist from Julio Thompson in the 12th minute, and Ryan O'Neal had a goal and an assist.
In other tournament games, Compton defeated LA City 3-1 to reach today's noon championship game. Fresno City beat Spokane (Wash.) 2-1 and Napa 2-0 to join Compton in the final. LA City plays Napa in the third-place game, and Hancock (6-1) plays Taft for fifth place, both at 10 a.m.
