FOOTBALL ROUTS WEST HILLS IN HOME OPENER, 44-0
SANTA MARIA-- Scoring 37 points off West Hills miscues, the Allan Hancock College football team routed the visiting Falcons, 44-0, in its' 2005 home opener at Righetti High School.
Hancock (1-1) scored its' first two touchdowns on turnovers in the second quarter. A snap over the quarterback's head set up the first TD. Linebacker Rick Aguilar (So., Lompoc HS) picked up the loose ball and ran for about ten yards. When he was about to be tackled, Aguilar pitched the ball to lineman Elisee Pompulis (So., Bronx, NY) who rumbled into the end zone for what resulted in a 76 yard touchdown play at the 9:43 mark. With 5:53 left in the quarter, Luke Deras intercepted a Kevin Tarango pass that bounced off the receiver, Mike Ridgell, and ran 18 yards for the score. Victor Velasco (So., Santa Maria HS) kicked both extra points to make the score 14-0.
Running back Drew Williams (So., Queens, NY) scored a TD with an 11-yard run with 3:37 left in the second period, after setting it up with a 24-yard run in a three-play 40-yard drive to make the score 21-0 at the half.
The Bulldogs began the second half with a crisp eight-play drive that covered 78 yards and spanned 4:28. The possession was capped by a 33-yard scoring run by Paul Jordan (So., San Luis Obispo HS). It was the Bulldogs' only score that was not set up by a West Hills turnover. The PAT was blocked, making the score 27-0. After another West Hills fumble, Velasco kicked a 40-yard field goal. The next drive by AHC virtually ended any chance of a Falcon come-back, when quarterback Jonathan Dally (Fr., Righetti HS) led the team on an 88-yard, 17-play touchdown march that lasted over six minutes. Dally ended the drive himself, scoring on a three-yard bootleg.
Desmond Patrick (Fr., Aliquippa, PA) ended the scoring with 1:41 left in the game on a one-yard TD plunge. In total, eleven Bulldogs ran the ball for positive yardage. Williams led the way with 121 yards on 14 carries. Patrick ran eight times for 60 yards. Anthony Melton (So., Delano, CA) had 44 yards on five carries in his first action of the year. Shaun Stewart (Fr., Queens, NY) added 33 yards on eight carries, and Jordan ended up with 31 rushing yards. AHC amassed 339 yards rushing for the game.
Dally tallied just 22 yards passing, with five completions in 18 tries, two to Derek Sedin (So., Righetti) for 17 yards.
Defensively, the Bulldogs were led by Aguilar, who had 13 tackles, two for losses, two sacks and a fumble recovery. Andre Lipscomb (Fr., Richmond, VA) had four tackles, including a quarterback sack. He also added an interception. Deras, who scored on the intercepted pass, added eight tackles.
Hancock opens Western State Conference North Division play on Saturday, Sept. 17 in a 4:00 p.m. start at inter-county-rival Santa Barbara City College. The game can be heard live on KUHL 1440 AM in Santa Maria and KTME 1410 AM in Lompoc, with the pre-game starting at 3:30 p.m.
