FOOTBALL PRODUCES SECOND-STRAIGHT DOMINANT PERFORMANCE, 45-15
COALINGA-- For the second week in a row, the Allan Hancock College football team dominated a game on both sides of the ball and routed West Hills of Coalinga, 45-15.
Hancock (2-0) scored twice in the first quarter and once in the second to build a 21-2 halftime lead. After taking a 28-2 lead early in the third quarter, AHC let West Hills get back in the game when the Falcons scored twice to pull to within 28-15. The Bulldogs quickly answered with 10 points of their own, putting the game virtually out of reach. AHC added a fourth-quarter touchdown to close out the scoring.
Drew Williams (Fr,. Queens, NY) started the scoring in the first quarter with a two-yard TD run. On the next possession, qurterback Andrew Jones (So., Lompoc HS) scored on a sneak from one-yard out. Early in the second quarter, West Hills drove to the end zone, but the Hancock defense stopped the Falcons on fourth down at the one foot mark. On the ensuing play, Williams was captured in the end zone for a safety, putting the Falcons on the scoreboard.
Williams followed that with a 15-yard scamper for his second TD on the game. Anthony Melton (Fr., Delano, CA) scored in the third quarter on an 11-yard run to make the score 28-2.
In the third quarter, West Hills scored the next two touchdowns on a three-yard run and a 65-yard fumble return, closing the gap to 28-15. Melton then broke free for a 62-yard touchdown run that settled the issue. Victor Velasco (Fr., Santa Maria HS) added a 27-yard field goal and a 31-15 AHC lead.
In the fourth-quarter, Bulldog coverage of Billy Vinnedge's (Fr., Arroyo Grande) punt forced a fumble that was scooped up by Wesley Sims (Fr., Long Beach, CA), who returned the ball 45 yards for the final score of the game.
Melton finished the game with 103 rushing yards on seven carries and Williams added 76 more on 16 carries. Starting quarterback Andrew Jones completed 11-of-19 passes for 150 yards. He also threw two interceptions. Ryan Bugg (So., Atascadero HS) finished with seven receptions for 91 yards and Adrian Pennywell added 59 yards on four receptions, most of his yardage coming after the catch.
The defense again dominated play, allowing only one offensive TD and only 130 yards rushing along with 97 yards passing. The Bulldogs came up with four interceptions and forced three fumbles that they recovered.
The Bulldogs open Western State Conference play next Saturday at home against Ventura College. Kick off will be at 7:00 p.m. at Righetti High School. The game will also be braodcast live on KUHL/Santa Maria and KTME/Lompoc Radio, with a pre-game show beginning at 6:30 p.m.
