FOOTBALL FALLS TO MOORPARK, 46-20
SIMI VALLEY-- The Allan Hancock College football team allowed six touchdown passes and fell to Moorpark, 46-20, in a crucial Western State Conference game at Simi Valley's Royal High School.
Hancock (5-4, 3-3 WSC North) entered the contest with high hopes of a post-season invitation from the California Commission on Athletics. A win over the Raiders would have put the Bulldogs in a second-place tie in the WSC Northern Division and elevated them in the state's souther regional poll.
But it was not to be, as Moorpark stormed to a 26-7 halftime lead, on the strength of quarterback Larry Dockery's right arm. The AHC defense entered the game allowing an average of just 108 yards per outing, but Dockery finished with 367 and six touchdowns. His performance set all-time Moorpark College records for passing yardage and TD passes in a game.
After Moorpark drove 66 yards to open the scoring, AHC pulled even briefly when sophomore fullback Walter Burnett burst up the middle for a 31-yard gain to the Raider five. Freshman tailback Drew Williams finished the drive on a five-yard touchdown run and AHC closed out the first quarter in a 7-7 tie.
The Raiders followed with five unanswered scores covering the second and third quarters. From there, it was simply mop-up. AHC managed two scores in the fourth quarter, as freshman safety Adrian Pennywell recovered a Moorpark fumble in the end zone and freshman tailback Anthony Melton scored on a one-yard run.
The Bulldogs close out their 2004 season at home Saturday against Western State Conference and cross-county rival Santa Barbara City College at Righetti High School, beginning at 7 p.m.
