FOOTBALL MAKES IT FOUR STRAIGHT, 44-9 OVER LAVC
SANTA MARIA-- Coach Kris Dutra's confident and balanced Allan Hancock College football team rolled to its fourth-straight victory on Saturday, 44-9 over visiting Los Angeles Valley.
With the easy win, Hancock (6-2, 4-1 WSC North) set up a huge conference showdown with Moorpark in Santa Maria next Saturday. A 34-21 winner at Santa Barbara, Moorpark (4-3, 4-0) remains undedefeated in conference play. After its' visit to Hancock, the Raiders will host WSC-North leader and No. 1-ranked College of the Canyons. A Bulldog win could allow the Bulldogs an opportunity to win out and ultimately earn an at-large berth in the state championship tournament.
AHC played another near-flawless defensive game, employed a balanced offensive attack and scored on a punt return in a game that was never in doubt. Not only did the Bulldogs make 23 first downs to L.A. Valley's five, Hancock amassed a 446-to-121 advantage in total yards. So dominate was the Bulldog performance, Coach Dutra and his staff were afforded an opportunity to clear the bench in the second half.
Lucious Sloan got the scoring started at the 9:44 mark of the first period, when he burst off right tackle for a 50-yard touchdown run. And although Brian Schneider's conversion kick went wide right, AHC added to the advantage on a 10-yard TD run by Michael Santos to cap a seven-play, 73-yard drive seven minutes later. The Bulldogs gave up their second safety of the season on a high punt snap early in the second period, but Schneider got the points back on a 30-yard field goal with just 40 seconds to play in the first half.
Freshman running back Paul Jordan scored from 17 yards out to cap a seven-play, 62-yard drive and give the Bulldogs a 23-2 lead at the 6:30 mark of the third quarter. A little over two minutes later, Eddie Scipio thrilled the home crowd with a sensational 57-yard punt return for a touchdown and an insurmountable 30-2 Hancock lead. On Valley's next punt, Scipio was off again, apparently scoring on a 70-yard punt return but it was nullified by an illegal block.
Back-up quarterback Andrew Jones came on to connect with reserve wide-receiver Justin Prince for a 37-yard TD and a 37-2 lead with 7:59 to play. Don Danils provided the lone highlight for the Monarchs on the ensuing kickoff, bolting through the Bulldog coverage team for a 97-yard touchdown return. Jones then directed a 13-play, 65-yard drive that culminatd in a nifty four-yard touchdown run by back-up tailback Jason Gomez.
Sloan led the Bulldog rushing attack with 79 yards on just eight carries, while Jordan and Santos added 65 each on 15 and eight carries, respectively. Prince was th leading receiver with three receptions for 53 yards, while Ryan Bugg had three catches for 41 yards. Starting quarterback Chad Nicholson completed 7-of-12 passes for 110 yards, while Jones hit on 3-of-4 for 53, including the TD to Prince.
The Bulldog defense produced another strong team effort, with Trevor Shamblee, Chris Nunez, Donnell Arrowsmith, Ricky Perkins, Ryan Roberts, Eric Thompson and Danny Brown leading the charge. Next Saturday's showdown with Moorpark will mark "Military Appreciation Night" for Allan Hancock College.
