NSBCART Names Hancock's Rodriguez and Henderson Athletes of the Week
Allan Hancock College basketball player Ali Rodriguez and football star Shane Henderson were honored on Monday for their impressive performances. The Northern Santa Barbara County Athletic Round Table named Rodriguez its Female Athlete of the Week and Henderson its Male Athlete of the Week.
Henderson took home the honor after he helped lead Bulldog football to a 34-29 upset win over College of the Canyons, the 8th-ranked team in the state. The Bulldogs also snapped Canyons' eight-game winning streak. Henderson caught 11 passes for a career-best 173 receiving yards and three touchdowns in the victory over the conference champions.
The upset capped Henderson's historic Hancock career. He set a new program single-season record with 74 receptions. The Indiana native also holds program records for career touchdown catches (19), career receptions (134) and career receiving yards (2,173.) He's also tied for most touchdown catches in a single season with 12. The Bulldogs finished the season 3-7 overall and tied for fifth in conference with a 2-4 mark.
Rodriguez earned the honor after she helped lead the Hancock women's basketball team to a 2-1 record to open the season. The 5-foot-5 freshman guard averaged a team-best 20.7 points per game for the Bulldogs.
Rodriguez started her collegiate career with a game-high 36 points in a season-opening 67-46 win over Taft College last Tuesday. The Pioneer Valley High graduate scored 24 points in the first half. She finished a perfect 9 for 9 from the free throw line and drilled 5 three-point buckets. Rodriguez was the Bulldogs' leading scorer with 10 points in a 63-40 loss to Glendale last Friday. She turned in a 16-point performance on Saturday in Hancock's 72-39 win over Lassen. Rodriguez added 3 steals and 3 assists in the win.
The women enjoy the week off from competition before they open the home portion of their schedule Wednesday, Nov. 27 at 3 p.m. against Reedley College.
