Hancock Men's Basketball Drops 74-73 Decision to West Valley at Cuesta Tournament

Shane Carney led a trio of double-digit-scoring Bulldogs with 19 points, but the Allan Hancock College men's basketball team dropped a 74-73 decision to West Valley College during the second day of Cuesta College's Rabobank Tournament on Saturday. The Bulldogs dropped to 1-1 to start the season. They will face College of the Sequoias on Sunday at 3 p.m. to close the three-day tournament. West Valley improved to 2-0.

Carney hit four 3-pointers in the first half. Despite 16 points from the sophomore guard and nine more from sophomore guard Devin Davis, the Bulldogs trailed 40-38 at intermission. However, after combining for 25 in the first half, the two were limited to five points – one 3-pointer from Carney and two free throws by Davis – in the second half.

Carney finished the game with 19 points and two assists. Davis ended the game with 11 points, four assists and six rebounds.

Hancock freshmen Glenn Jordan and Spirit Ricks picked up the Bulldogs offensively in the second half. Ricks scored all 10 of his points, and Jordan poured in all nine of his points in second half for the Bulldogs. Jordan added a team-best seven assists, while Ricks pulled down six rebounds.

Freshman forward Trenton Mitchell led the Bulldogs with seven rebounds to go with his four points. Mayowa Akinsanya contributed seven points and five boards.

West Valley hit ten 3-point buckets in the win, while the Bulldog hit seven, five by Carney. Delvon Nisby sank six 3-pointers for West Valley to finish with 23 points. Devante Johnson led the way with 24 points.

Both teams shot 67 percent from the free-throw line. After making just 3-of-8 in the first half, the Bulldogs finished 16-for-24 overall. West Valley hit 18 of its 27 free throws.
