Despite Grand Slam from Dowell, Bulldogs Fall 15-4 at No. 3 Cypress

Sophomore left fielder Brian Dowell slugged a grand slam, his first collegiate home run, but the Allan Hancock College baseball team could not keep up with No. 3 Cypress on Saturday and fell 15-4. After two meetings over a three-day period, Cypress outscored Hancock 31-7. The Chargers improved to 11-3 while Hancock fell to 7-7.

Second baseman Chad Jones and Dowell collected two hits apiece. Jake Shusterich added a single as Hancock was outhit 14-5.

Phillip Martin took the loss on the mound. The sophomore allowed eight runs, five of them earned, and five hits over 2 1/3 innings. The Chargers scored three times against both Shusterich and freshman Jesse Gasca. Jeff Fernandes allowed just one hit and an unearned run over 3 1/3 innings of relief. The Arroyo Grande High School graduate struck out four and walked two.

The Bulldogs return home, where they are 6-0, to host College of the Sequoias on Tuesday, February 27, and Taft on March 1. Both games start at 2 p.m. at John Osborne Field.
